Tutoring

Where math stopped making sense

Most students who struggle with math aren't struggling with this year's work. They're struggling with something from two years ago that never got fixed.

The first session is about finding that gap. From there we work in short, focused steps — practising until a concept holds, then connecting it to what the class is doing now, so school starts feeling manageable again.

  • Students with learning disabilities are welcomeSessions are paced to the student, with repetition, visual supports and as much patience as it takes.
  • Progress you can seeYou'll hear what we worked on and what to practise before the next session.
  • Flexible schedulingWeekday appointments, in person or online, arranged around your family's week.
  • Affordable ratesStraightforward hourly pricing, discussed before we begin. No packages or contracts.

Translation & interpretation

Saying it the way it was meant

A translation has to carry more than words. It has to carry the tone, the intent and the cultural context behind them.

I've worked as a freelance translator and interpreter for over 17 years, much of it alongside the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County, supporting newcomer families. That means school meetings, medical appointments, settlement paperwork, employment interviews and everything in between — the situations where being understood actually matters.

About Maria

Experience, stated plainly

I've spent my working life between languages and classrooms — and I'd rather tell you exactly what that experience is than dress it up.

I hold a Bachelor of Education and a degree in Psychology, both assessed and recognized in Canada. The psychology side matters more than people expect: a lot of tutoring is reading what a child is actually stuck on, and noticing when frustration — not ability — is the thing in the way.

Alongside that I've taught Ukrainian language and International Languages programming through the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board's Heritage Programs, I currently teach a Ukrainian Heritage class, and I've spent years tutoring students through the Ontario elementary curriculum.

I hold a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check and up-to-date first aid, CPR and child safeguarding training — the same standards expected of anyone working with children in a licensed setting.

Families come back because their children make progress. That's the part I'd ask you to judge me on.

Questions

Before you get in touch

What ages and grades do you tutor?

Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 for math, following the Ontario curriculum. Language tutoring is available for students of any age, including adults working on English, Ukrainian, Polish or Russian.

Do you tutor in person or online?

Both. In-person sessions are arranged in LaSalle, Windsor and nearby Essex County communities such as Tecumseh, Amherstburg and Essex. Online sessions run by video and work well for reading, conversation practice and most math at this level. Many families mix the two depending on the week.

What do sessions cost?

Rates are hourly, and I'll quote them clearly on our first call before you commit to anything. There are no packages, registration fees or minimum terms. Translation and interpretation are quoted per project or per hour depending on the work.

My child has an IEP or a learning disability. Can you help?

Yes, and students with learning disabilities are genuinely welcome. Sessions are paced to the individual, with repetition and visual supports as needed. To be clear about scope: I provide tutoring support, not special education services. I don't assess, diagnose or write IEPs, and tutoring is not a substitute for the programming your child receives at school. If you'd like, share what's in the IEP and I'll work with it.

Can you prepare my child for EQAO?

Yes. We work through past-style questions, the format of the assessment and strategies for managing time and test-day nerves, alongside the underlying skills. This service is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by EQAO or any school board.

Can you certify a translation for immigration or court?

I'm not a certified member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO), so I can't issue an ATIO-certified translation. Some organizations — including IRCC — will accept a translation from a non-certified translator when it's accompanied by an affidavit sworn before a commissioner for taking affidavits or a notary public, which can be arranged. Always confirm the requirements with the body receiving your document, and tell me what they've asked for. If you need something I can't provide, I'll say so.

Are you screened to work with children?

Yes. I hold a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check, along with Standard First Aid, CPR-C and child safeguarding training. Documentation is available for any parent who would like to see it — please just ask.

What if we need to cancel or reschedule?

Just let me know. Children get sick, work runs late and weeks fall apart — I'd rather move a session than have anyone feel bad about it. There's no cancellation fee and no minimum notice. A message whenever you know is all I need.

Is what I share kept private?

Yes. Student information, documents and anything discussed during interpreting stays confidential and is never shared without your consent, except where disclosure is required by law — which in Ontario includes the duty to report a child who may need protection. A written confidentiality agreement is available on request.
